Project Title: Tiny Ties, Big Decisions Training for Parents
Tools Used in Development: Articulate Storyline, Audacity, Camtasia
Time in Development: about 2 months
Client: One Muni Well & Kidspace Adaptive Play and Wellness
Collaborators: Dr. Faraneh Carnegie-Hargreaves & Karen Peck
My Role: Instructional Designer, eDeveloper, Visual Designer, Project Manager
Executive Summary: This project is an introductory training to help parents understand oral ties, explore treatment options, and follow a structured process for making informed care decisions for their baby. Practitioners often spend the first several appointments explaining foundational concepts, reducing the time available for deeper consultation and personalized care. In addition, many parents experience emotional stress when making treatment decisions and often feel influenced by the opinions of others. The training is designed to provide clear foundational knowledge while guiding parents through a reflective decision-making process centering their values and family circumstances.
Challenge: Many participants were new mothers with limited, fragmented time for learning, which required a mobile-friendly course that could be accessed in short sessions during moments such as nap times or nursing. The training also needed to efficiently integrate essential foundational knowledge while offering optional deeper content for learners who wanted additional information. The client had never previously collaborated with a learning professional and was simultaneously building a new business and brand identity during the project. Finally, the instructional scenarios were based on real patient experiences, requiring careful anonymization to protect privacy while preserving realistic and meaningful decision pathways for learners.
Solution: I designed a mobile-friendly microlearning experience that parents could complete in short segments during limited pockets of time. At the center of the course was a decision-making framework that guided parents through a reflective process for evaluating care options for their baby. To support different learner needs, the course provided concise foundational instruction on oral anatomy, oral ties, and treatment options, along with optional extended content.
The learning experience included several key assets. First, a fully scripted introductory video created in Camtasia that explained oral ties and introduced the decision-making process. My client provided the voiceover and Audacity was used for sound editing. Second, an interactive, scenario-based course created in Articulate Storyline 360, and a visual job aid that summarized the framework so parents could easily reference it when making care decisions. In addition to designing and developing these assets, I facilitated the instructional design process with the client, guiding them through each stage and incorporating collaborative feedback throughout the project.
Results: The course was piloted with a group of pediatricians, nurse practitioners, lactation consultants, and parents who had previously navigated oral tie decisions for their own babies. Feedback from the pilot group was overwhelmingly positive. Participants rated the course highly, strongly agreed that it was easy to navigate, and indicated they would recommend the course to parents of babies with oral ties. Pilot reviewers also agreed that the training would be immediately useful for parents facing this decision. Several noted that the decision-making framework helped simplify a complex and emotionally charged topic while encouraging parents to reflect on their own values and family circumstances. Medical professionals in the group indicated that preparing parents with this foundational knowledge could make early appointments more productive by reducing the time needed to explain basic concepts.
Future Impact: As the course is implemented with new parents, it is expected to help families approach care decisions with greater confidence while enabling practitioners to spend more appointment time on treatment and individualized care.
